What is the American Legion?
Founded by World War I veterans returning home from Europe, it is the largest wartime veterans service organization in the nation with approximately 2.4 million members in 14,000 Posts. It was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness and is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization.
There are 4 sub-organizations that form the American Legion Family - Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion (SAL) , Auxiliary and Legion Riders - each with their own eligibility criteria based on one's relationship to a veteran, living or deceased. For those with no eligible relationship to a veteran, a Social membership is available. For more information on eligibility requirements and membership application forms, click here.
Each Legion Family organization has a fierce devotion to supporting our nation's veterans, current servicemembers and their families. We are also committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor and promoting strong national security.
